Twenty-six

Three blocks away, still buzzing with adrenaline and nervous energy, Alice pulled over. A good time to review the situation.

Would the guys complain? Not about her specifically because that would mean they’d have to admit having their asses whipped for the second time in a week. By a girl. If they told the truth about this incident, they’d have to tell some shadow of the truth about who she was and why she came back and how they’d lied in the first place. That was unlikely. If they were smart, they’d blame the mythical bikers and keep it to themselves.

But the fabric of the friendship was broken now. It would only take one of them to step out of line. The most aggrieved, most likely. Davy. He’d lost two vehicles now and would be wearing that nose splint for another month.

On the other hand, Big Jim would blame him and Rick for being taken in the first place. Two against one in such a remote spot? With a toy gun? Hell, he’d taken her on himself and he was half crippled.

Rick would say how it had been Davy’s approach, Davy’s idea. He’d just been riding shotgun.

Maybe Davy would mention Rick’s reaction to him being tied up behind him. Maybe he wouldn’t. Either way, the suspicion would remain.

Which left the crime scene.

It was a crime scene. Whatever reason they came up with for being tied to a tree, the police would investigate. And that was where most criminals came unstuck. The elation of a successful job, the victory moment when escape was certain. That was the moment vital clues got left behind.

Davy’s phone and Big Jim’s camera were in the truck cab. Gone. Likewise the box of memory cards and the cigarette butt. They wouldn’t get any saliva or DNA off that.

What about her own stuff?

Wig, sunglasses, toy gun. Check.

The rope? Just rope. Maybe it had picked up a few fibers from her clothes, but she’d dispose of them later. Besides, it wouldn’t likely get examined anyway. She hadn’t killed anyone.

Footprints? Tire tracks? The ground was dry and hard.

Fingerprints? Only in the interior of the truck, and that was now a burned out shell. She’d touched nothing at Big Jim’s mama’s house. There was the coffee cup and cutlery in the diner, but they would have been in the dishwasher right after she left. As for the motel room, if the cleaner was sloppy, there’d still be a few prints around. But if the cleaner was that sloppy, there’d be a few hundred other prints besides.

That just left the rental and its registration plates. She’d nudged the front of the car into brush deliberately. And the way she’d tied them up, the car was right behind them. Hard to see. They might have memorized the plates from the parking lot or on the drive over, but that was unlikely.

All in all, she was pretty clean. All they had was a memory of her face. And guys like that weren’t big on faces.
